Okay Sistahs, It's Time for XLII!
I realize that I'm probably in the minority when it comes to this Sunday - I'm one of those women who actually looks forward to the Superbowl each year. And no, it's not just for the advertisements (although that is a plus). And no, it's not to sit and wait in anticipation of the half-time show. It's just something that is a part of me. Perhaps I have my childhood to thank for my love of the game. After all, growing up with six brothers meant that sports was just a part of life.
So many good memories were made during football season. Wanting to be like my big brothers, I would hang-out with them watching various college and professional football games, always rooting for the "best dressed" or most vividly colored uniform. (I am convinced that is where my fascination began with The University of Michigan and my driving force for making that my school of choice when I was a mere 8 years old. Who can resist the ever-recognizable maize and blue uniforms?) Then, during half-time, we would race outside to play our own game of football - one of my brothers would always bring the play down to my level when we were in the huddle. For example, he would draw my "route" on his chest while explaining; "Okay, JB, you run to the firehydrant, then turn left 5 steps and cut back to the tree." Oh, the endless variations of the "front yard playbook."
In honor of this auspicious occasion, I thought I would send out a checklist to those of you who can't wait are going to be viewing the game on Sunday as well. Here are some things you can do to get yourself into the spirit of the day:
- Check out the Official Superbowl XLII website;
- Meet the Official Superbowl XLII mascot, Spike;
- Know your facts, such as who's playing, official point spread, etc.;
- Find out who will be the featured performer to play during the halftime show;
- Get & read football cliffnotes such as:
"Putting on the Blitz, The Football Book for Women" by Suzanna Gagnier (I just got my copy),
"Football for Dummies" by Howie Long and John Czarnecki, or
"Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm Watching the Game!: A Woman's Guide to Loving Pro Football"
by Holly Robinson Peete and Daniel Paisner;
- Review past Superbowl ads in anticipation of seeing something that may be the next
launch of something big as in 1984 when a company called Apple Inc. launched their
ad campaign for a personal computer called Macintosh, see here;
- And finally, go shopping - for food stuffs and maybe some adult beverages of course! Check here, here for standard fare, and here for the Food Network foodie in you!
Enjoy and please check out "My 30 Days of Everyday" on Go-Go Mommy.
By the way, Go Patriots! (How can I not cheer for my fellow U of M alum, Tom Brady?!)
