" That lady says that you are fat"

J0237725 I turned forty last week, and decided it was time to whip my body into shape. I live in the land of the healthy people. Everyone walks, runs and bikes on a daily basis. I sit on my tush, drive my kids to school, and the farthest I tend to walk is from the my parking spot to the Stanford Mall. How un-Californian is that?

All winter I had the excuse that it was too cold or rainy. Oh yeah, I had that fancy gym membership that I never went to. Somehow I always found my way to the coffee place or Whole Foods for a vegan muffin, but could just not make it to Vivre. On my husband's fortieth, he requested that I quit as his gift. So I did. Happy Birthday, no more monthly dues. Then we got into a pool and tennis club. A club with an exercise room. An exercise room with a personal trainer. For some insane reason, I agreed to join my good friend Lisa in joint personal training sessions. I looked for every reason not to go- but I have already paid in advance, so I went. My trainer is one of the most positive people

I have ever encountered. I am trying to re-program my thoughts, into "I can", instead of "I can't".  I look a lot healthier than I am. I am so weak and un co-ordinated it is scary. (Do not let trainer hear me say that!)   My goal is to be able to do one, yes one push up !  I have signed on for six weeks of torture, wish me luck.

So, my trainer tested my body fat and all that good stuff. I was reading my report to a friend  when Beckett overheard me discussing my body fat, and need to drop a few pounds. "What, that lady says you are fat...she is stupid, I hate her !"  I love the fact that my son is so protective, but my younger kids think that this is crazy. Why would I want some one to tell me to loose weight or make me exercise ?  I have tried to explain that I want to be healthier and live longer. There is no convincing Beckett of anything other than she is "rude".  So the role of my trainer in my life has been called into question by my six year old. I question the fact that I put on spandex pants and go out in public!  I hope Beckett can see my trainer in the role she is playing- finally some one is getting me of my lazy tush!

Good luck. I'm turning 40 soon and I feel like my metabolism has ground to a halt. keep us posted

I feel your pain. I am 44 and my thyroid headed south at age 39. I tell everyone over 40 to get their thyroid checked. It made a world of difference with me and my over 40 slide.

Good for Beckett for sticking up for his mom! He's right--you are SO not fat. Wear that spandex proudly!

Happy belated birthday!

I just turned 39 a few weeks ago and had the same epiphany so I joined our local Stroller Strides. I love the fact that instead of 1 trainer I have a whole group of supportive moms (and kids that are just happy to run around and play), but I'll never look at the park the same way again! YGG!

I am turing 49 this year-you're just a tot!
I was the girl who has always had to work out while my skinny high school friends scarfed down Jack in the Box tacos. I have had to work out from a young age, to stay a size 12 or therebouts.. I think I was a size 12 as a fetus.
The gods smiled on me and made me tall and big (size 10 shoe), and I don't look what the numbers on the scale say. I still hate the damn scale. I rationalize its my Russian weightlifter manly legs that account for these numbers.. From one who was born with a metabolism of a slug, I hear ya.
