American Idol

The NEXT American Idol

Ai_logo Simon, Paula and Randy finally did it!  They chose the final 24 contestants - thank goodness.  Last night's episode went on forever. I could not bear watching another crying contestant with their life in ruins and dreams dashed - sigh!

Seriously though, my daughter and I love to watch American Idol.  I admit I Tivo it and fast forward through Ryan Seacrest's lame comments and through the unending amount of commercials, but we watch it religiously.  I LOVE the episodes leading up to the final 24, where they weed out the thousands of folks applying.  I could not sing to save my life, but I know it.  Where are some of these kids friends and families? Are they deaf?  Regardless, they provide plenty of entertainment for me and my 4 year old.

American Idols on Tour Hits San Jose, and SV Moms Are There

Svmomsidol_2 CityMama, Bad Kitty, Jill, Lia and I went to the American Idols on Tour concert at HP Pavilion in San Jose last night.  Before the show, Jill forced us to make signs at Stefania's house, like a frantic cheerleader before the homecoming pep rally.  Jill really knows how to get into the spirit of things, and such is her devotion to Sanjaya.  I had plans to throw granny underwear onto the stage with Jill's phone number embroidered on them, but was thwarted by my inability to either do the laundry or go to Target before the show.

Jilltvguide_3 After we got to the arena, we stopped off at the TV Guide booth in the lobby and Jill recorded a message to the Idols, while the giant, disembodied head of Kimberly Caldwell looked on.  Watch for Jill's question to appear on the TV Guide Channel, right above the day's listings for The Weather Channel.  I believe it was something like, "Sanjaya, can I do your hair?  I have two girls, so I have experience with unruly manes."

Since the audience was mainly made up of nine year old girls, there were no lines for the bar.  This made certain mamas very, very happy. That, plus the amazing array of fried foods available at HP Pavilion, the fact that we had no kids with us, and the anticipation of seeing the top ten American Idol finalists, made for a pretty cheerful group.

Finally, we took our seats, and immediately, our collective dreams of seeing Sanjaya and crew live and in person were fulfilled.  Sanjaya took the stage, dressed in a white jacket and red pants, making him look like a Christmas waiter.  The ear-piercing screams of 'tween girls filled the auditorium and could be heard as far away as Gilroy and Fremont.

Sanjaya3 There was a big projection of Sanjaya's amazing "journey" on American Idol, and his poufy hair loomed large over the stage like the Great and Powerful Oz.  The clips reminded us of how we watched him grow from goofy, awkward performer to goofy, awkward phenomenon.  His voice was actually better in person than on TV.  He seems to have grown in confidence.  He still needs to work on his showmanship, since he missed his cues on a couple of the group numbers.  I'm not sure I'd say I've been converted to a Fanjaya, but the kid kind of grows on you after a while, and like athlete's foot, doesn't seem to ever go away.

Navyphil Thorughout the night, each of the Idols came out and did solos, there were a number of duets, and some group numbers with three or four people.  The divas did a rousing version of "Lady Marmalade" dressed as color-coordinated hookers.  We started screeching right along with the 'tweens every time Blake Lewis came out. I'm not sure why, but it seemed like the thing to do.

The group song that got the biggest reaction was Navy Phil's somber rendition of "In the Navy" "America the Beautiful", with Melinda, Lakisha, Gina, and Haley standing by looking like pissed off Girl Scouts.

Citymamasaysboo_3CityMama gave it the big thumbs-down.  It was saccharine beyond all reason, right from the "Up with People" playbook.  But hey, this isn't "States Formerly Known as the Soviet Union Idol."  The 'tweens went berserk.  Finally, a song that third graders know all the words to.

Lakisha The showstopper was LaKisha Jones singing the Whitney Houston/Dolly Parton number, " I Wiiiiiillllll Allllwaaaaaays Looooooove Yooooooouuuu."  She was divalicious, and every note perfection. It looks like she got her teeth fixed and she was looking every inch a star.

My only complaint was not enough Melinda.  I mean, you would have thought Jordin won or something.  And puh-leeze don't go telling me some ridiculous tale about how Jordin won, because in my reality TV fantasy world, Melinda won, and LaKisha was first runner up.

Jordinsparks Near the end, it turned into the "That's So Jordin Show," with Jordin Sparks doing a series of her hits from the show, nearly weeping after every number.  She was a bit hoarse, and some of the high notes were pretty sharp.  A few were in the key of dog whistle and actually made my fillings vibrate.  I could hear Randy Jackson saying, "It was pitchy, dawg."    She looked gorgeous, however, and soldiered on, despite the fact that she seemed to be losing her voice.

After Jordin's set, the Idols all returned to the stage for a finale song, and then returned for an encore.  For some reason, the encore song was the funereal "This is My Now," perhaps one of the greatest buzz-kills of all time.  People started to leave at that point, but many more stayed on to the end.

Overall, I enjoyed the show.  The Idols seemed comfortable on stage and seemed to genuinely like each other.  They all seem earnest and happy to be there, and don't seem to have developed the arena-sized egos that have befallen some of the past contestants.  It was cheesy good fun, and something you could take your kids to and enjoy as a family.

The best part was hanging out with some awesome women bloggers. To think, I get  to hang out with these chicks, and hundreds more like them this weekend at BlogHer.  That makes me want to shriek like  a 'tween at an American Idols concert.   They are my American Idols.

Laceless Converse - The Julian Hornik Video

After reading that Julian Hornik took part in a Macy's NYC singing competition, and then won, I had to check out his video. Here it is:

I also put it in the category of American Idol since that is where he is heading! Having an 8 year old son that is also interested in music, it is great to have role models of kids like Julian who set a goal and make it happen.

My daughter's stardom leaves me frazzled while American Idol makes me feel maternal

Blake_and_jordan A few weeks ago my daughter was proclaimed a star... at her preschool.  The whole thing filled me with anxiety. It combines all the mom things I totally suck at --producing crafts and baked goods.  Last year I at least got to do something I'm good at -- read a story.  But this year my daughter took over that role and read a book to the class.  Yes I'm really proud of her that she can read.  But let's talk about ME!

First and biggest anxiety was to produce a poster of my daughter's life.   I thought the first part will be easy.  I'm tech savvy like many Silimom and so I figure I can upload photos to Costco and get them printed.  I learned the hard way that printing photos yourself sucks up oodles of my time and produces worse photos.

But the Costco website wouldn't take my password and wouldn't email me my password. I felt doomed.  I can't even succeed at the one part I thought I could cover.  I panic and start to write this post.  As I'm writing FINALLY the password arrives.  I felt like a total idiot because my password is completely stupid.  I change my password to something less stupid.  Since I've just publicly announced I have an account at Costco.

The poster turned out to be pretty good.  It helps that my daughter can cut things herself now.  I actually can't cut properly.  Ironically using scissors to cut out shapes is one of the tests for Kindergarten Readiness.  Good thing neither Bryn Mawr nor Haas asked me for this test. :)

But another star moment for my daughter was when she sang in the Assembly at preschool.  She knew all the words and all the motions and she sang her little heart out.   But again I had the anxiety of trying to capture the moment on camera and not doing so well at that either.

Which brings me back to American Idol.  I already blogged about several reasons why the show appeals to me.  But I had forgotten that one big appeal for me is that I feel proud and maternal in a lesser but similar when "my idols" do well.  Maybe one of the reasons I like Sanjaya so much is that he sorta reminds me of my brother at the same age.  And Melinda just seemed so sweet.  Okay I'm not quite old enough to be Melinda's mother unless I had her as a young teen.  Even so.

During those weeks I got to be a proud stage mama with no real consequences and very little of the anxiety.  Yes I'm sad that neither Melinda nor Blake won.  But all I had to do was call a few times on the phone.  I did call for an hour and a half with Blake for the finale.  I knew it was a losing battle.  Jordin just outsang him that night.  But I did what I thought was right.  I'm sure they'll all do fine.

I suspect I will buy Blake's album to hear what he does with his songs but I doubt I'll go to any top ten Idol's concert.  It would sorta ruin the illusion for me that they're my kids.  Yes I'm the Paula Abdul sort of watcher.  So sue me.  But please don't break my nose.

What will we do now that American Idol is over?

What are we going to do with ourselves now that American Idol is over? Seriously. D and I might have to learn to read or take up knitting. I'm already looking forward to next January when it starts all over again. Why do we love Idol so much? Why does America love Idol sooo much? I think it's about the participation. Not just the voting, but being a part of the journey of seeing someone rise from obscurity to celebrity. We fall in love with their song, persona, or story. And it’s fun, ooooohh so much fun. Can we watch Sanjaya perform with Joe Perry again? So after a world record 74 million votes, Jordin Sparks is the next Idol. Thanks for the entertainment everybody. I’m so in love with that Carrie Underwood remake of the Pretenders' “I’ll Stand by You.” Watching Blake beat-box with Doug E. Fresh was wildly entertaining. Never thought I’d be into rap. Thanks Blake for widening this country girl's horizons.

Could Blake Lewis make me cool?

Blake Lewis is making this frumpy mom cool again. (Well, I’m not sure if I ever was cool, but I’d like to think I had a little mojo back when I was skinny, tan, and working in Malibu).

But seriously, I’m into him. Which I didn’t really know (or want to admit) until I quietly seethed when Seattle Sun told me she took the day off work, left her son in day care, and went to Bothell's Blake Lewis Parade. I was sooo jealous.

So here’s how he’s making me cool: He’s singing hip, edgy songs from new artists that I haven’t heard of but am liking (lately my music repertoire consists of the entire Music Together collection. Thanks to Blake, I might go download a Maroon 5 or a Robin Thicke.

So even though I picked Jordin to win the Idol pool my husband orchestrated (the stakes are $200), and I agreed with Simon that Melinda deserved to be in the final (but you know she's going to have a stellar career anyway), I’m for Blake. He may not be the best singer, but he’s the best entertainer. Every week I look forward to seeing what he might do next. Other than Carrie Underwood, I think he's the first Idol whose album I'd download.

Why I love American Idol: an embodiment of American values

American_idol_mayI'm definitely what we'd call in Silicon Valley a "late adopter" to the whole American Idol thing. This is my first season ever watching any episode of the show. But I guess blogging about it several times and watching every single episode this season makes me a fan now.  I blame Jill for the blogging part.  Her hatred of Sanjaya prompted me to write my first blog about American Idol: Sanjaya makes me laugh.

Okay maybe blogging does not a fan make.  But what makes me a fan is American Idol embodies some American cultural values (both good and bad)

  • Absolute faith in the democratic process. The people decide who wins
  • Glorification of entertainment and the entertainment industry
  • Belief that individuals can make a difference not only by voting but in huge problems like poverty by voting and donating their money - Idol Gives Back
  • Like the idea that "anyone can be president" (some restrictions apply), "anybody can be the Next American Idol(TM)" (some restrictions apply)
  • Entertainment covering entertainment
  • The belief that you can know someone's heart from watching them on tv, even though you have never met them.

And since I'm a fan, I know the show started in the UK, but it has really taken off here.  I had shied away from American Idol for years, because I thought it was only about entertainment, and silly at that. And I still feel we get carefully packaged versions of these singers, but after all that's entertainment. It's the moral values that kept me coming back. And as an import from the UK myself, I think that makes me an American to believe that a show about entertainment can have morals.

I know Jill and I have our fierce differences about Sanjaya, but actually the week he stopped being entertaining and I stopped voting for him, he got voted off.  Even my 5 year old daughter wouldn't watch him that week. I sorta miss Phil and his big blue soulful eyes, but he's not a good a singer as some of the others. And as for Chris, there's only so much Boy Band a girl can take.

I like the Final Four. I still want Melinda to win. She combines both a wonderful voice and a lot of heart and delivers it week after week. Plus my 2 year old son still screams like a groupie whenever he hears her sing. But Blake comes a close second.  He makes every single song his own. Jordin has a great voice and great potential, but sometimes does seem young and misses in her performances. And LaKisha sometimes just blows me away with those pipes of hers, but other weeks, her heart doesn't seem to be in her songs.

Hey American Idol fans, did you give last night?

I've been a fan of American Idol for the last three years now. During this time, I've been entertained, engaged, and enraged (I'm still angry over Latoya London, Jennifer Hudson, and Stephanie Edwards getting the boot when they got it). My husband and I even had a major fight over Katherine McPhee (and I shudder to think what might happen to him if he comes home from LA AFTER SEEING THE SHOW LIVE TONIGHT without bringing me something totally worhty of my SAHM devotion). So thank you, American Idol for all the entertainment ....and for bringing us Sanjaya. But I'm especially grateful to American Idol tonight for doing Idol Gives Back. Midway through the show, Ryan Seacrest announced that we'd already raised 30 million dollars in aid for sick and starving kids in Africa as well as the US. I wiped tears from my eyes multiple times during the show. You can't walk away from seeing that footage and not be moved. (If you missed the show, download Carrie Underwood's video filmed in Africa, to get ths gist.) Thank you FOX, the sponsors, and the celebs that made it happen to make it "cool" to give. You rock. Am I The Only One??

SanjayaAm I the only person who doesn't watch American Idol???  I am a reality TV junkie but I have never watched AI.  Well, I always watch the first few episodes of of American Idol when they show all the horrible singers auditioning.  Once they are down to the top twenty, I could care less about the show.

For those who are reality junkies but don't watch American Idol, here are a few of my new favorites which I encourage you to check out.

  • Tori & Dean: Inn Love--Tori Spelling and new husband Dean McDermott, as they head past the Hollywood Hills to make a new start and open a B&B.  Tori seems as dumb as she looks but it is hilarious!
  • Deadliest Catch--Voyage to the Bering Sea and follow the brave captains and crew of eight crab-fishing vessels as they struggle against the treacherous weather conditions doing one of the deadliest — and most lucrative — jobs in the world.  Truly amazing to see what these men and women go through.
  • Workout--Work Out follows the professional and personal life of Jackie Warner, elite trainer and owner of Sky Sport & Spa in Beverly Hills, CA.  A fitness maverick with a dynamic, no-nonsense attitude, Warner will accept only the best in every aspect of her life. She not only hires the most talented and vibrant trainers to work in her gym, but she lets them know that it's her way or the highway.  Talks about gay/lesbian issues.  Love this show!!!

So while everyone else is watching American Idol, I will be watching my lesser known shows and loving every minute of it!  Am I alone, or anyone else NOT watching AI?
