Summer, Vacations, Hurricanes, Oh My!
This is the first summer that our family is spending the summer in 3 different time zones. We all went to Princeton to visit the grandparents and great-grandma who turned 90. I came back soon afterwards (work :-[ ) with husband and MA a few days after. Then, we drop off MA at friend's (who were just back from their vacation and dealing with 9 timezone jet-lag; Thank you, Kate!) and pack for ... our first non-weekend vacation since BC. That's right, a vacation ... just ... by ... our ... selves!
It didn't hit me until the plane landed in Maui and I breathed in the humid air. Yes, a vacation. A real vacation. Just the two of us. It was surreal because I was still reacting to kids' crying or yelling but it would take a second before my brain would relax (oh, it's not mine!).
Day 1 went by fast driving to our beautiful hotel in Wailea and enjoying the sites. My face is tired from smiling so much. It's soooo relaxing, sitting by the pool, watching the gorgeous sunset, sipping colorful tropical drinks with little paper umbrellas. Aaaah!
Day 2 : We woke up to learn that some tropical depression in Pacific turned into a Category 4 Hurricane overnight. It's 800 miles away and barreling straight for us. So we are planning a trip atop Mount Haleakala to sacrifice something to whichever Hawaiian god we pissed off.
Day 3: I twist my left ankle and bang up my right knee while on my way up to see the Heritage Gardens. So excited was I that missed the little dip in the path. *sigh* So, here I am back in the hotel room, lying back with ice on my raised ankle and thinking we really REALLY need to do that sacrificial offering thing early tomorrow morning, say before sunrise. Rocks are good offerings for volcano gods, no?
