Planning the Unthinkable
When my husband and I attend a party together, he often finds himself the center of attention.
This is not because of his dashing good looks and winning personality (although those are qualities I see in him and appreciate). The moment the other guests learn that he is a geologist, they find him insanely interesting. It's akin to the experience of doctors whose acquaintances want free medical advice -- only in my husband's case, these folks usually have just one question:
When is the next earthquake going to hit?
Of course, that's impossible to answer. There is still much to discover about the natural movements of the earth's crust, and no one has yet figured out a reliable method of predicting when "the big one" will hit. The only thing we know is that earthquakes occur on a daily basis, and some of them are large enough to do some damage...

Do the math: That's more than one disaster per year.
