Overcoming Breastfeeding Challenges
Breast is definitely best, but that doesn’t mean that the nursing process is an easy one. Breastfeeding can be a rollercoaster of highs and low, with various health problems often threatening to stop you short before you reach the goal timeframe you set for yourself.
Most of the challenges we encounter when breastfeeding can be overcome, so long as you educate yourself and approach the situation with determination.
No matter what the problem, there is almost always an answer that doesn’t involve giving up breastfeeding. If you’re really struggling then make sure you visit with a registered lactation consult or a doctor with plenty of experience with breastfeeding to find the solution that works best for you.
Thrush is one of the most common conditions nursing mothers face. The yeast infection can be passed back and forth between mom and baby during breastfeeding, making it difficult to eliminate completely. If you experience symptoms like stabbing pains between feedings or if you see white patches in your baby’s mouth, head to the doctor and treat the thrush consistently to heal up as quickly as possible.
This infection can be seriously uncomfortable and causes many moms to give up breastfeeding earlier than they would like. Mastitis is a painful inflammation in the breast that can cause flu-like symptoms and fever. To treat it, keep nursing as much as possible, take ibuprofen and rest in bed with your baby until you’re feeling better. If the infection doesn’t begin to clear within a couple days then antibiotics from your doctor might be necessary.
This problem doesn’t effect as many women as you might think- many mothers think that they have low supply when in fact it’s just right for their baby. However, if your baby isn’t gaining weight as she should be and a lactation consultant has confirmed that low supply is the problem, don’t let this put you off continuing with breastfeeding. The main solution is to nurse as much as you can and pump in between to encourage more milk to come through. You can also try increasing your fluids in the day and eating more nutritious foods, as sometimes a mom’s diet and water intake can be at the root of the problem.
