Family Necklace

About a month and a half ago I was watching Oprah. Don't laugh!  I'm sure you have your vice too.  Mine happens to be Oprah. And Dr. Phil And American Idol. And What Not to Wear...

But I digress.

In the Oprah episode I'm speaking of, Oprah interviewed Seal and his wife Heidi Klum.

"Whatever," I though, "I know nothing about them, and I'm not too interested. But then they began talking of their love for each other, their kids, and their priorities.  And somewhere during that show they displayed their family necklaces.

Family necklaces. What a cool idea!! My husband and I got talking. We wanted a family necklace too.

Tales of a Silicon Valley Mom in New York, New York for Fashion Week and the Times Square Post Superbowl Party

Sunday wasn't my usual Sunday.  Some moms watched the Superbowl. Others watched the ads.  I went to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. Fashion Week began Friday at 8am Eastern. I didn't know until Saturday at 8am Pacific time that I was even going. I decided on a whim to apply for a press credential and when I was accepted, I took a few stabs at getting into shows.

As of last week, I had done a little planning in terms of lodging and flights, but was on the fence since my daughter was having a difficult week. Then she began feeling better, so I decided to go.  I took my daughter to her first dance class ever (priceless - one of those moments I'll never forget - she loved it so much) then six hours later, I caught what was probably her bug. 12 hours pre-flight I was on the couch with the chills, my daughter yanking my blanket off & fussing because I didnt want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with her.

Diamonds May Be a Girl's Best Friend, But a Great Hair Stylist Is Priceless

I couldn't stand it any longer. I tried to hold off as long as I could.  I tried to accesorize, putting my hair up in a pony tail, wearing cute hair clips, and given the cold weather, wearing a different hat every other day.  But, last weekend, I had to go to a fancy, schmancy wedding.  And I didn't want to look "cute".  That was my everyday mommy incognito:  jeans, pumas, cardigans and sweatshirts.  No, this wedding called for me to do my superwoman-spin-till-I'm-dizzy transformation into a 30-something Silicon Valley woman.

Every outfit I was trying on just didn't seem to work. I hated all my usual favorites and there was only 15 minutes before the babysitter was going to arrive.  Aaaaggggh!  I should've gotten my hair cut sooner, rather than always putting it off and putting it off .. Without a good hair cut, everything just didn't look right at all.

Out of exasperation, I took a pair of scissors and started snipping. I started out lightly, barely taking off any length. But,then, I got daring. What the heck, my hair looks terrible anyways.  Might as well go for heavy fringes.  Bangs are back.  Just commit, I told myself.

Ah, The Choices We Make

I had it all figured out - got the press credentials, started working with PR people and contacting designers for invitations (received two so far!), found the right flights to use my miles, arranged to stay with a friend, another will be performing in a show that I was hoping to see, I filled out the "vote by mail" forms, it was all worked out - I was going to cover Fashion Week! Fall clothes on the runway in the tents right in front of me.

Then reality hit. My daughter got sick, our nanny found a new job (it was a temp thing; we knew it was coming), money stress kicked in, and the overload of not catching-up on anything since the holidays caught up with me. Melt down...

The Right Outfit at the Wrong Time

I've always said any outfit is appropriate, it just depends on where you are when you wear it. For example, I wore a nightie and yoga shorts to a pole dancing class last year, but I wore a conservative tweed skirt and black sweater with an attached bow (almost prissy!) to my grandfather's funeral. Last Tuesday, forevermore to be remembered as Forgotten Child Day, I had slipped into an outfit to attend the Gorgeous and Green fashion show in San Francisco with fellow SV Mom Blogger Sarah G. who was covering the story for her blog, SF Bay Style.

I'm certain that when Forgotten Child's Mom rang my doorbell at 5pm and found me in a somewhat sexy backless black outfit and too much mascara for a playdate mom, that I got the Bimbo of the Day award in her world. I'm sure her first thought was "what is she DOING dressed like this while hosting a playdate??" If I'd danced Victoria Jackson's "I am not a Bimbo" song (1990s Saturday Night Live) in my entry , it might have actually helped the situation. My first thought was, "OH...MY....GOD... I forgot to calendar the playdate and left the boys at Kids Club." 

Playing eclectic dress up

My daughter loves to dress up - play dress up in princess dresses, dress up for real for a special occasion, dress up like her brother (she puts his cargo pants on backwards, but oh well), dress up for a normal day at school or at the park. She's a typical 3-year-old in that she wants to pick out her own clothes and she puts some weird stuff on at times. She actually does a pretty good job - she pairs things that I would never put together and it ends up working most of the time.  A blue sundress with a pink tutu underneath was somehow pulled together with leopard shoes, a short brown sweater and a funky brown patterned headband.

Last week, she was invited to be a model for a friend of mine who designs "eclectic" skirts. My friend also has this (foreign to me) knack for putting things together that somehow work. My daughter took to this little dress up/modeling session immediately. She had so much fun. After she tried on three skirts, she asked:

I am going to a party tonight - woo hoo! Not a kids party, mind you. Which is what we are normally up to. But an actual adult party. It is the celebration of my good friends whose family has been reunited after the husband served 6 years in the Navy - he joined up right after September 11th. He was never sent to Iraq, thank goodness (pause for a shout out to all those soldiers who have been in Iraq or still are), but it has been very tough nonetheless. The wife has a Silicon Valley job and with her hubby gone most of the time either on the ship or in Lemoore (the middle of nowhere, basically), they have missed out on a lot of time with each other. Their son is my twins age, almost 4, and his dad missed out on his first Christmas and his first birthday. Anyway... it is cause to celebrate that he is finally done with his service (and he was a super star, by the way!), he has an exciting new career at a space systems company and the whole family is back together in Silicon Valley.

So...my personal problem in all of this is that I have to (notice that I did not say "get to") dress up. I am such a Mom dresser - jeans, khaki cargo pants, yoga pants with flip flops. Does a velour sweatsuit qualify as getting dressed up? According to Tim Gunn, apparently not. Jeans won't cut it either tonight. I used to really love shopping, when I had time, money (since I was working full-time I never felt guilty) and opportunities to wear fun and dressy clothes. In the past 4 years, however, it has been hard to motivate to get dressed up very often - especially since I just know any nice clothes that I buy will become stained, pulled on, and otherwise ruined in the first five minutes of wearing them around my kids.

I've Created a Manolo Monster

Clomp. Clomp. Clomp. Down the hall she goes, in my Manolos.  I only own one pair, bought as an investment purchase - the perfect black leather slingbacks for my collection and yes, they are as comfortable as everyone says.  So comfortable that my not-even-two year-old is infatuated.  She loves shoes, but she really loves my Manolos. Sigh.

Somehow I'm guessing Mr. Blahnik didn't have her in mind when he began designing shoes, but then again, maybe he did.  She's young, she's pretty, she has discerning taste (to my chagrin, she's ten times more naturally gifted at putting together ensembles than I), she's a jet-setter, and somehow as a toddler she's already learned how to walk in heels.

Emmys 2007, Old Hollywood Glamour and Hot Moms On The Red Carpet

I have to admit that my favorite part of watching award shows are looking at the dresses, which I find is great fantasy fodder for a mom who spends her days in sweats.  The 2007 Emmy Awards were shown last Monday night. I found pictures of the dresses worn by the stars on InStyle, E! Online, People and FabSugar. All the fashions sites were calling the overall style "Old Hollywood Glamour" . The trends were long satin dresses, high slits, flared "mermaid" dresses, earings as key accents, knee length dresses with sparkle and colors like black, white, grey and vibrant colors. Moms should take note of these trends, just in case they are called to the red carpet, instead of cleaning melted cheese sticks off their kid's carpets.

Katherine Heigl was wearing a glamorous white long dress with a flared skirt, Ali Larter and Kate Walsh had red satin gowns and Sandra Oh had a graceful black gown with a white accent. Eva Longoria and Michelle Pfeiffer looked beautiful in their knee length sexy dresses with extra sparkle. I am especially proud of local Bay Area mom

Mod*Mom, A Movie Star For a Day

My complete lack of photography skills can not capture the inner/outer beauty and radiance of Mod*Mom on her makeover day. Before the Silicon Valley Moms Blog Makeover, I was already a reader of her blog Mod*Mom.  And then she won the contest, so I was excited to meet her. Little did we know that she would end up feeling like a movie star and calling me her press agent after I gave her the fantastic agenda for her day-o-pampering and then followed her around taking pictures. Luckily, the Palo Alto Weekly asked to cover the day so we had the privilege of a real photographer taking pictures and reporter taking notes.

I grew up in Palo Alto and have been reading the award winning Palo Alto weekly for years, so it was exciting to see them in action. Mod*Mom and I asked the "real" photographer what his secret was for taking a good picture. And he said "take lots of pictures for each shot, then you will be able to find one good shot". Luckily, Mod*Mom's positive energy transcended my lack of photography skills and I also took some nice photos.

Mod*Mom was also gracious to say that there were so many other moms who entered the contest that deserved to win, I just had to say back "All moms deserve pampering, so enjoy!". And she did.......
