The Best Breakfast Smoothies
Us moms don’t get a lot of time in the morning to make a balanced breakfast. Between getting the kids ready for school, dressing hyper toddlers and trying to clean up everyone’s mess (including our own) it can get pretty chaotic. I find that smoothies are the perfect go-to breakfast for those crazy mornings. They have the potential to be super nutritious without being time consuming- I just throw a few ingredients in the blender and take my concoction in the car with me.
Sadly, not all smoothies are created equal. Some can be full of sugar and lacking in nutrients, so it’s all about choosing your ingredients wisely to find a recipe that will power you through your busy morning.
Here are some of my favorite healthy smoothies:
Apple Spice Oatmeal Smoothie
This smoothie is chock full of goodness. All you need is 2 chopped up apples (peel them first for easy blending), a banana (or half if you want to reduce carbs), one cup of your favorite kind of milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and half a cup of rolled oats.
Make sure you soak the oats for a few minute in the milk to soften them up, then blend it all together for a delicious smoothie. This is one of my top choices for autumn mornings.
Clean Green Smoothie
When it comes to your food, green is always a good thing. For a refreshing green summer smoothie, I whip up one chopped up cucumber (a pretty small one), two peeled ripe kiwis, half a cup of Greek yoghurt, ice cubes and cilantro leaves. This smoothie tastes fresh and delicious and is perfect for hot, humid days.
You may not imagine avocado working well in a smoothie, but it really does- the flavor blends right in and adds a richness to the drink, and it also packs a nutritional punch for added energy and vitamins. I take one avocado, ¾ of a cup of orange juice, ½ a cup of frozen raspberries and ½ of frozen blueberries and blend together for a superfood power smoothie.
